There's something unique about the sound
of many bands - Catatonia, The Charlatans
and Reef to name but three. Irish three-piece
Turn, though, seem to have none of this uniqueness
- or at least seem to display very little
of it on debut offering Antisocial. This is not necessarily a bad thing; the
album contains some very listenable tracks,
with styles ranging from melodic, bouncy
surfer rock-pop on Queen Of My Heart to what one presumes would be thrash if
the band grew their hair and stopped wearing
suits.
Every track, though, has a common feature
- it causes the listener to say to him/herself,
'Now where have I heard this before?' Standout
track Antisocial recalls Teenage Fanclub, but there's no
secret as to who this band admires
the most.
They're heading out on tour with them
imminently,
they thank them in their sleeve (twice)
and
that's no surprise because almost every
track
on the album reminds one of Idlewild
at some
point. Little Discourage, When I Argue I See Shapes, Actually It's Darkness and others are all recalled at various times
during Antisocial.
Idlewild are a good band, make no mistake
about it. But it's just like taking your
entire character from all your friends in
general and one in particular, and having
nothing of your own to offer - a little bit
antisocial, really. Oh, and no band can hope to maintain credibility when
they name a track on their album after
their
bassist and his girlfriend.
