OVERVIEW The Subsonics was a power pop band from Dublin. The group formed in about 1999 with a lineup of Stefan Murphy [Vocals & Guitar], Gareth Desmond [Keyboards], Johnny Quinn [Bass Guitar], Shane Walsh [Drums] and Mark Healy [Guitar]. Tht lineup had also played a number of gigs as Mirrorball before adopting The Subtonics name. The band released one single during its lifetime. This came in the form of 'Half Time Holiday' which was released in late 2000 or early 2001. THe record received decent coverage on 2FM, FM 104 and BBC Radio 1. The band was also reputed to be working on a album under the working title 'Two Fingers To The World'. In August 2003, the band performed at the annual Hard Working Class Heroes in Dublin. In 2004, Stefan left the group to focus fully on The Mighty Stef, his solo project. He was replaced on vocals by Ray Gilligan who had performed with Mark in The Josephs. However, this line up was not to last long as the band came to an end not very long after this. Gareth and Johnny went on to form Analogue Mindfield. Johnny later performed with The Zenotones and J-Roots. Mark later cropped up in Elevens alongside Martin McCann [Sack] 1999 - The Subtonics came into being after the same lineup had played a couple of gigs under the Mirrorball moniker 2000 - Release of 'Half Time Holiday' single 2001 - The Subtonics play a headline gig at Whelan's Dublin [28 January] 2003 -The Subtonics perform at the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival in Dublin [03 - 04 August] - The Subtonics perform at the 'Temple Bar Music Centre' in Dublin [05 December] 2004 - Stefan Murphy leaves the band to pursue a solo career as The Mighty Stef. The band recruit Ray Gilligan (who had previously performed with Mark Healy in The Josephs) as a replacement vocalist. SONG TITLES : 'Bottle Of Chips', 'No Thanks' |
