"Zevon Better Than The Real Thing" Hot Press
1995
Alan Byrne took time out from slaving over a hot guitar this week to update us on Something Happens' rehearsals at The Factory with Warren Zevon.

"When someone told me we'd not only be supportin Warren on his American tour, but acting as his backing-band, I reckoned they were taking the piss," Byrne laughs. "Then, when I realised it was true, I thought 'Brilliant!' because whatever way you look at it, the guy's a legend.

"We've been at it for a week now and got four songs from the new album and 12 old ones pretty much worked out. The best thing for us is that he hasn't come over expecting Something Happens to do photocopies of Warren Zevon records. He wants us to put our own stamp on it, so there's been a bit of arrangement changing and general messing around."

Much to Alan's disgust, they've yet to muddle their way through "Werewolves Of London."

"It's in the set, but we're not rehearsing it," the bassist reveals. "There's only so many times you can play a song and between you and me, I think he's browned off with it at this stage! Generally, though, he's been having as much fun as we have. Reading seems to his big passion and he's been going crazy buying up everything he can about Beckett."

Now that himself and Ray Harman have worked with a consummate professional, where does this leave Tom Dunne?

"Er, unemployed!"
