OVERVIEW The Shanks were an indie rock band who were active throughout the 1990s. The group was formed in Newmarket, north Co. Cork before relocating to Cork City. The early line up of the group featured Tim Murphy [Guitar & Vocals], Eoin O'Sullivan [Guitar], Mick Hayes [Bass Guitar] and Niall Lynch [Drums]. However, Tim left the following year. The band continued as a 3-piece with Eoin and Mick assuming vocal duties. The band developed a strong reputation as a live outfit. In 1993, The Shanks performed at the Fleadh Mór Festival in Tramore, Co. Waterford. The band's debut release was a 7" Flexi Disc on their own Skanksalot label. The record was released in 1994 and featured the tracks 'No T-Bag' and 'Trickle Away'. The band recorded their debut album in Connolly's of Leap along with Paddy McNicholl. The album, 'Prawn Lawn' was released in 1994 on Rescue records. It is understood that the band recorded a couple of cassette EPs, however, no details are currently available. The Shanks also recorded a Fanning Session which included 'The Pool', 'Stink', 'Nowhere Left To Go' and 'Babbling Brook'. By 1999, the band was back to being a 4-piece with Donagh O'Shea recruited on keyboards. That year also saw the band unveil its second album entitled 'Brang'. The record was well received and garnered much critical acclaim. However, the band had run its course. They signed off with a gig in Fred Zepplins in Cork. Eoin would later pop up in The Céilí Allstars and Stanley Super 800. Mick and Niall would go on to perform with Rulers Of The Planet while Niall also drummed with Jonny Rep. 1991 - Band formed 1992 - Tim leaves the band 1993 - The Shanks perform at the Fleadh Mor Festival in Tramore, Co.
