OVERVIEW Sam Obernik is a Dublin-born, London-based chanteuse. She is best known for her collaborations with dance artists such as Tim Deluxe, Linus Loves and Alex Gaudino. She has also released a body of solo work as well as her Barefoot side project. These releases have brought Sam a significant amount of success - Top 40 singles as well as Dancefloor Smashes. It all started with a 15 year old Obernik taking to busking on Dublin's Grafton Street along with the likes of Glen Hansard. Hansard was the lead singer with The Frames. However, around this time Alan Parker was preparing to shoot the film version of Roddy Doyle's book, The Commitments. Hansard was recruited to play the role of Outspan Foster. Obernik auditioned for a role in the production, however, she did not make the final cut. She relocated to Los Angeles for a period in her early 20s before settling in London in the late 90s. Over the next period, she performed under her own name and built up a loyal following. However, a chance meeting with Tim Deluxe, saw Obernik provide the vocals to his track 'It Just Won't Do'. The single went on to sell over 250,000 copies and Obernik became a dance music queen. Building on this success, she was signed up on an album deal with East West Records and recorded her debut solo album entitled 'Stellify'. However, disaster struck when the label folded a month before ther release of her record. Undeterred, Sam formed the group Barefoot along with Tommy D. Barefoot released an album of the same name in 2006 which included reworkings of 12 dance classics including 'Born Slippy', 'It's Like That' and 'Hideaway'. Over the following years, Obernik continued to collaborate with other mainstays of the music industry including Alex Gaudino on the 2007 track 'Que Pasa Contigo' as well as Paul Harris [from Dirty Vegas] and Dave Spoon on 2008's 'Baditude'. 2003 - Release of 'Mr. Butterfly' single [12 May] |
