OVERVIEW Mutefish is a Dublin-based band which incorporates elements of reggae, folk and trad to form its own unique sound. The richness of musical influences may have something to do with the diversity of cultures within the group - with members from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Ireland. One of the band's founder members, Vaclav, was from The Czech Republic. It was, Vaclav, who was responsible for the band's name. As he had difficulty speaking English, he claimed that he felt like a mute fish. He is no longer with the band, however. The current lineup features Bogus Stelmach [Guitar & Mandolin], Marka Lovkil [Cajon & Guitar], Tomas Pupalaigis [Bass Guitar], Peter Karabasoff [Drums & Percussion] and Daithi O'Cearuill [Flute & Tin Whistle]. The band was originally formed by Bogus, Marka and Vaclav who had been busking on Dublin's streets. The band recorded its first demo entitled 'Zeby To Bylo Spoko' in 2007. Shortly after this, the group took a hiatus as Bogus returned to Poland to complete his studies. He returned to Dublin in 2008 and the band picked up where they had left off. Early in 2009, Tomas joined the group on bass guitar. However, within a couple of months of Tomas joining, Vaclav departed Mutefish. As they figured out what to do next, the remaining three members formed a side project called The Braconniers who played a style of surf music. Later that year, they recruited Peter on drums and Daithi on flute and tin whistle. Mutefish was active once more. The band quickly made up for lost time and soon entered the studio to lay down some demo tracks. The result was the 'Muteation' demo which featured a total of 14 tracks. Several of these would later appear on the band's debut album. That album, entitled 'On Draught' was released in 2010. 2007 - Recording of 'Zeby To Byle Spoko' demo 2009 - Tomas Pupalaigis joins the band on Bass Guitar - Vaclav departs the band - Peter Karabasoff [Drums & Percussion] and Daithi O'Cearuill [Flute & Tin Whistle] join the band - Recording of 'Muteation' demo 2010 - Release of 'On Draught' album |
