DUBLIN | 1999 - |
OVERVIEW Since the formation of The Maladies in September 1999, this Dublin based band has persistently captivated Irish audiences; from their early days of Battle of the Bands in Temple Bar Music Centre, Whelans and Vicar street, to their own headliner gigs in each and every crevice of the Dublin music scene, leading most recently to 3 nationwide tours in 2004, playing some of the best known venues in Ireland (Roisín Dubh, The Stables) as well as the well loved local watering holes from Moville, Donegal to Leap, West Cork. This extensive touring, coupled with previous supports with the likes of Turn and Relish, fine tuned the band's sense of live performance and, shockingly, opened an even greater onslaught of musical diversity to their repertoire. In September 2003 the band released their debut album ‘The Maladies’ through independent record label White Heat. Since then they have received a warm reception with some of Ireland's finest DJ's, such as Dan Hegarty (2fm), Dave Fanning (2fm), Edel Dooley (Beat 102-103fm) and Paul Clarke (Phantom fm) playing the band regularly, with Tom Dunne (Today fm) making them his Rising Band Of The Week, playlisting Ocean Song. Through constant touring in 2004, The Maladies picked up new friends and fans, interviews on local radio around the country and their first ever television appearance, on TG4. In May 2004, they were one of four bands asked to play at Phantom fm's first ever live gig broadcast along with Chuzzle, Autamata and Juno Falls. In September, the band took part in the Hard Working Class Heroes festival in Dublin, headlining the Friday night in The Mezz to an electrically charged audience. From November through to January this year, the band decamped to Homestead Studios in Antrim to record their second album with producer Mudd Wallace (Therapy?, Watercress). If the first album genre hopped a little, the second takes huge bounds between different styles, mixing elements of funk, folk, garage-pop, and...(whisper it)...jazz into what is an already eclectic sound. The Album, titled A Whole Bunch Of Rivers will be released in 2005 preceded by a single release and tour of Ireland. 2003 - Release of debut album 'The Maladies' [September] |
