Lerner came in to being in 2004 after the Martin Ryan Band underwent a name change. The early line up of band featured Martin Ryan [Vocals & Guitar], Karen O'Doherty [Fiddle & Electric Violin], Diarmuid Galvin [Bass Guitar & Glockenspiel] and Hugh Dillon [Guitar], all of whom had performed with the earlier group. Ciaran Manning also played drums in an early line up, featuriing on the band's debut album. The group's line up continued to evolve over the years. Alson Arnopp and Anto Noonan [ex-Catcher And The Rye] both joined the band in 2005. Darragh Enright is also known to have played with the band for a period.

The band's sound has been described as indie folk. Lerner recorded its debut album '...Still, Waiting' with Karl Odlum over the Winter of 2004 and Spring of 2005. The record was finally released in November 2005. In 2006, the band contributed the track 'Taking Over Thee' to the 'Magic Nights In The Lobby Bar' compilation. Lerner's second album was a long time in the making. However, the record was unveiled in February 2012. Entitled 'Calm Road', the album included 13 tracks.
