| OVERVIEW Creativity is about using what's around you to create something beautiful. Seeing past the obvious. With the autumn 2004 release of debut EP Saya Nova, Úna Keane asserts her own particular brand of piano-driven folk rock. A beguiling vocalist, a classically trained pianist and the creator of intelligent, sophisticated songs, Keane doesn't shy away from difficult subject matter. Socially savvy, she on the one hand touches on themes of fear, abuse and hope, while quite happily indulging in romanticism, as with her intrigue at how we all perceive differently, love differently and ultimately feel differently. Favouring the independent route, the Dubliner set up her own UKM label in 2004 as a vehicle upon which to release her debut 4-track. The EP garnered some good reviews in the press and title track "Saya Nova" was playlisted on Ireland's national station 2FM for 1 week upon its release. She's currently focusing on touring while working continuously on her debut album. Among recent work in the area of music for film is the score for short feature "Doghouse", which was televised on two occasions by RTE as part of their "Short Cuts" series. Other film music projects are in progress. "The obvious comparisons (Bush, Amos) are certainly hard to avoid but Keane has more than her share of her own personality and a distinctive voice to boot" Hotpress "Keane's lyrics are poetry on paper but when she sings the words, a transformation occurs. The music from her glittering piano playing, the simple but effective drums with the rusty reverberation of the bass all set a classically mythical tone even before she starts singing. Comparisions with Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos will quickly come to mind but her similarities to Janis Ian are more exact, especially on the title track" Musician.ie 2004 - Release of 'Saya Nova' EP 2010 - Release of 'Trees' album [05 November] 2011 - Release of 'Mr. Icarus' single [06 May] |
