October Swimmer Lakota
5/5
Who the hell are these, and where did they come from? JJ72 (nope, I don't understand either) are a trio of Dublin teenagers with a penchant for perfect hooks in an acoustic rock stylee. Even the b-sides are great. Think Cyclefly's Declan O'Shea singing U2 songs with The Crocketts in a flowery field, and you're probably along the right lines. You'll be hearing a lot more from this bunch, I can assure you.
October Swimmer Lakota

Initial playing of this CD will have you adamant that bass player Hilary Woods is actually providing the vocals, but this is not the case. The vocal range displayed here by Mark Greaney (vocals and guitar) is stunning, taking us on a rollercoaster ride through pitches and tones that haven't been heard since the days of Sparks.

With an average age of just 18, JJ72 prove here that they are, without a doubt, old heads on young shoulders.

Taking into account JJ72 are only a 3 piece group, 'October Swimmer' is an incredibly rich-sounding debut pop song that could set them on the path to securing that ever elusive deal with a major label…
Snow Lakota
28 February 2000
JJ72 (named after a German fighter plane no less) are the latest next big things to come soaring out of Dublin. Snow starts off all mellow and soft but as Mark Greaney raises his voice to enquire Why wont it snow/Like they said it would? the guitars crash in around him. The effect is quite stirring and the song is an impressive follow-up to their debut October Swimmer from last year.

Greaneys vocal talents are more audible on Willow, the moody sting laden second track. The atmospheric, instrumental Fresh Water ends proceedings. A thousand bands forget that energy does not always equal beauty and JJ72 deserve praise for putting them all to shame with a simple melody and an unpretentious lyric. Dont mistake me; they seem to have an arrogance that defies their tender age but they also have style and thats the subtle difference.
