OVERVIEW Karan Casey is a well known Irish folk-singer. She has been involved in music from an early age. Since this time, Karan has had exposure to folk, jazz, church and classical musical genres. She studied Piano at Waterford RTC before moving to Dublin in 1987 to further her studies. She took music at University College Dublin. It was during this period that she experimented with different musical styles with her performing in various jazz and folk bands. She also formed her own group, Dorothy. during this period. In 1993, Karan moved to New York and studied Jazz at Long Island University. During this time, she renewed her interest in Irish traditional music. She sang with Atalntic Bridge before joining Irish-American traditional music group, Solas. This proved to be a defining moment in her career. She performing with the group for about 4 years. During this time, SOlas released 3 albums - 'Solas' [1996], 'Sunny Spells And Scattred Showers' [1997] and 'The Words That Remain' [1998]. In 1999, Karan made the decision to branch out on her own. In her solo career to date, she has released six albums - 'Songlines' [1997], 'Seal Maiden' [2000], 'The Winds Begin To Sing' [2001], 'Distant Shore' [2003], 'Chasing The Sun' [2005] and 'Ships In The Forest' [2008]. In 2006, Karan collaborated with Solas once more on their live album 'Reunion : A Decade Of Solas'. In 2010, Karan collaborated with John Doyle on the album 'Exiles Return'. 1993 - Karen moves to New York where she studies Jazz at Long Island University 1994 - Karan sings with Atlantic Bridge before joining Solas 1997 - Release of 'Songlines' album 1999 - Karan leaves solo and goes solo 2000 - Release of 'Seal Maiden' album 2001 - Release of 'The Wind Begins To Sing' album 2003 - Release of 'Distant Shore' album - Karan performs as part of the second series of Other Voices, Songs From A Room which was recorded in St. James Church in Dingle. The series is broadcast on RTE Television in the Spring of 2004. 2005 - Release of 'Chasing The Sun' album 2008 - Release of 'Ships In The Forest' album 2010 - Release of 'Exiles Return' album in collaboration with John Doyle
