Chicks are a revelation. When three girls - whose collective age won't qualify them for a pension for a good few years - bound onstage and launch into a tunefree, thrash-pop racket, it doesn't augur well. That said, they do bound onstage like pop stars, even though they're not. Yet. But suddenly they pull "Let Me Go" out of the bag and there's not only a great tune, but a startling voice, too. From here on in they show their true colours: there's nothing brattish about them and they're very smart. Truly, they're the daughters of Riot Grrrl, a perfect pop Huggy Bear, as their closing romp through Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl" (key lyric: "When she sings/I hear revoloution") proves. Elsewhere, they appear as the blessed union of The Shangri-Las and THe Ramones, and it doesn't get much better than that. Chicks are a good deal cooler than you already. Catch up while you still can.
