WEXFORD | 200x - 2009 |
OVERVIEW Chaplin was a Wexford-based independent rock band which was active during the best part of the 2000s. The group was formed from the ashes of another teenage rockband with a lineup of Ian Doyle [Vocals, Guitar & Keyboards], Kenny Doyle [Guitar, Vocals & Percussion], David Rossiter [Guitar & Percussion], Mark Ballantyne [Bass Guitar] and Sean O'Leary [Drums & Vocals]. In about 2007 Lee Byrne replaced Mark on bass guitar]. The band took its nae from Chaplins pub on Hawkins Street, Dublin. The band was drinking here in advance of its inaugural live performance. However, the outfit was with a name. Therefore, the band decided to go with the name of the establishment that they were frequenting. The band opened its recorded account in 2006 with the release of 'Swings And Roundabouts' EP. The group's second EP, 'Paint By Numbers' followed in September of 2007. 2008 was a big year for the band. They made it to the final of the 'Vodafone Bright New Sounds' competiition. That year also saw the band support the great Paul Weller in Cork. Chaplin was also chosen to headline the 'School Of Rock' festival in Wales. In early 2009, 'The Story Goes', which had featured on the 'Paint By Numbers' EP was included on the 'Acoustika ::: Vol. 13' compilation on 272 Records. However, the band had almost run its course and before long had split. Ian went on to forge a solo career under The Man Whom moniker. 200x - Band formed 2006 - Release of 'Swings And Roundabouts' EP 2007 - Release of 'Paint By Numbers' EP [September] 2008 - Chaplin reaches the final of the Vodafone 'Bright New Sounds' competition - Chaplin headline the 'School Of Rock' festival which took place in Fisguard, Wales [06 - 08 June] 2009 - Band split |
